RevOps Glossary
Crisp, operator-written definitions for the core concepts underpinning Revenue Operations, Go-To-Market strategy, and systems engineering.
Revenue Operations (RevOps)
The strategic alignment and operational management of marketing, sales, and customer success systems, data, and processes. It breaks down departmental silos to create a single, predictable revenue engine that drives growth from first touch to expansion.
Go-To-Market (GTM)
The overarching strategy and operational plan an organization uses to engage customers, deliver unique value, and achieve competitive advantage. It encompasses pricing, sales channels, marketing tactics, and the systems required to execute them.
Attribution
The analytical process of identifying which marketing or sales touchpoints contributed to a closed-won deal, and assigning revenue credit to them. It is the core mechanism for understanding return on ad spend (ROAS) and channel effectiveness.
Lifecycle Stages
The standardized phases a contact or account moves through as they transition from a stranger to a paying customer and advocate (e.g., Subscriber, Lead, MQL, SQL, Opportunity, Customer, Evangelist). Accurate stage definition is critical for conversion rate tracking.
Lead Scoring
A methodology used to rank prospects against a scale that represents the perceived value each lead represents to the organization. It combines demographic fit and behavioral engagement to prioritize sales outreach.
Lead Routing
The automated systemic process of assigning incoming leads to the appropriate sales representative based on criteria like territory, company size, round-robin equity, or account ownership. Flawless routing is essential for minimizing speed-to-lead.
Speed-to-Lead
The measurement of time elapsed between a prospect signaling intent (e.g., filling out a demo request form) and a sales representative initiating contact. Lowering speed-to-lead exponentially increases conversion rates.
Pipeline Coverage
The ratio of open, qualified sales opportunities to the revenue target for a given period. A healthy SaaS pipeline coverage ratio is typically cited as 3x to 4x the quota, accounting for average win rates.
Forecasting
The process of predicting future sales revenue based on historical conversion data, current pipeline volume, and sales rep commitments. It relies entirely on strict CRM data hygiene and rigorous stage gate enforcement.
CRM Migration
The highly technical process of moving an organization's customer data, automation logic, and operational processes from one Customer Relationship Management platform to another (e.g., Salesforce to HubSpot), requiring careful data mapping and change management.
Ideal Customer Profile (ICP)
A detailed description of the type of company that derives the most value from your product, costs the least to acquire, and is least likely to churn. It dictates targeting, system design, and GTM architecture.
Product-Led Growth (PLG)
A go-to-market strategy where the product itself is the primary driver of acquisition, retention, and expansion. In RevOps, PLG requires complex data integration between product usage analytics and the CRM to trigger sales interventions (PQLs).
Fractional RevOps
A service model where a company retains an external team of RevOps specialists (strategists, architects, admins, analysts) on a part-time or subscription basis, rather than hiring those roles full-time in-house.
Revenue Architecture
The structural design of a company's revenue-generating systems and processes. It acts as the blueprint linking GTM strategy to the actual software configurations (CRM, marketing automation, data warehouses) that execute it.
Data Hygiene
The ongoing operational discipline of ensuring CRM data is accurate, complete, standardized, and deduplicated. Poor data hygiene breaks automation, ruins attribution reporting, and destroys leadership trust in RevOps.
MQL / SQL
Marketing Qualified Lead (MQL) designates a prospect whose engagement indicates a high likelihood of becoming a customer. Sales Qualified Lead (SQL) designates an MQL that sales has vetted and accepted for active pipeline pursuit. The handoff between these two is a primary focus of RevOps.
